UPDATE: IRS/SS # Scam

The IRS/SS # scam, which hit last spring has impacted over 210 N.H. providers.

NHMS is maintaining ongoing communication with the Secret Service, which is actively working this case.

Over the past several weeks the Secret Service has reached out to NHMS and asked us to randomly sample the victims of this scam.

They have asked for confirmation of certain activities (unrelated to the practice of medicine) such as relationships with financial advisors, employment management firms, auto financing, home financing, etc.

Secret Service Making Progress in its Social Security Number/IRS Fraud Investigation

On May 21, 2014, N.H. Medical Society Executive Vice President Scott Colby met with the local U.S. Secret Service special agent working the case of IRS fraud that appears to involve a disproportionate number of healthcare providers.  Providers affected thus far include physicians, physician assistants, APRNs, dentists, podiatrists and pharmacists.   

Medicaid Enhancement Tax Legislation

The Medicaid Enhancement Tax paid by N.H. hospitals is the subject of two superior court decisions and two pieces of legislation. The Senate-proposed amendment to HB 1613 would not expand the MET to other provider classes and would reduce the tax rate over three years as more Granite Staters become insured. The House proposed amendment to SB 369 has two sections.

Many of you may be aware of a breaking scam where providers’ (physicians, physician assistants, APRNs, dentists, podiatrists and pharmacists) social security numbers have been compromised and false tax returns have been submitted to the IRS.

Medicare Transition Complete

On October 25, 2013, at 5 p.m., the Medicare Part B workload transitioned from NHIC Corp. Medicare to the new National Government Services Jurisdiction K (JK) A/B MAC. What does this mean for you?

1) National Government Services may not be able to transmit ERAs created prior to October 25, 2013, to the new clearinghouse, which may impact your ability to download ERAs.

2) Failure to submit the correct contractor number (14312 for New Hampshire) will result in the batch file being rejected.

Dr. Woods announces his retirement as NHMS delegate to the AMA

At the interim meeting of the American Medical Association on Saturday, November 16, 2013, Gary Woods, MD announced his retirement from his position as N.H.’s AMA delegate.  Dr. Woods’ contribution to the AMA on behalf of N.H.’s physician community spans more than two decades and has encompassed literally thousands of hours of volunteer work on your behalf.
