Active members shall be physicians, except as otherwise specifically noted, who are in good standing and who shall pay dues. Such members may vote and hold office.

Associate members may be teachers of medicine in New Hampshire who are not practicing medicine; physicians who are not licensed to practice medicine in New Hampshire, but who are serving in New Hampshire for the purpose of extending their education and not primarily for remuneration. Locum tenens physicians may be associate members. Associate members shall pay dues as determined by the New Hampshire Medical Society Council, but they may not vote and they may not hold office.

Student/House Officer members. Medical students, interns, residents or fellows who may or may not be licensed to practice medicine in New Hampshire are eligible to be student/house officer members. Such members shall not be required to pay dues, but will be allowed to serve on committees and councils.

Emeritus members shall be those who have been members in good standing of this Society for a period of twenty years and have retired completely from practice or have been a member in good standing for a period of twenty years and have reached the age of 70; or those who are disabled; or those to whom the payment of dues would be a hardship. Emeritus members shall be determined by a majority vote of the New Hampshire Medical Society Council upon recommendation of their respective component societies. Emeritus members shall not be required to pay dues but may vote and hold office.

Honorary members shall be those in this or other states who have been previously elected as honorary members of this Society; also those in this or other states who have acquired an honorable distinction in their profession. A two-thirds vote of the New Hampshire Medical Society Council shall be necessary for their election. They shall not be required to pay dues and they may not vote or hold office.

Physician Assistant Affiliate members of this Society are those physicians' assistants who are registered with the State Board of Medicine and are supervised by a physician who is a member of the Society. Affiliate members shall pay dues as determined by the New Hampshire Medical Society Council, but they may not vote and they may not hold office.

All officers, members of the New Hampshire Medical Society Council and members of all Committees -- scientific, standing or special — and the Council on Education, shall be members in good standing of the state Society and shall be current in the payment of dues where required when they assume office.

Except as otherwise specifically provided, all members of county societies and/or New Hampshire state specialty societies, who are members in good standing of the state Society and who have paid their annual dues, shall be privileged to attend and take part in all meetings.

No person who is under sentence of suspension or expulsion from this Society shall be entitled to any of the rights or benefits of this Society, nor shall he/she be permitted to take any part in any of its proceedings until such time as he/she has been restored to membership. Any action taken by the New Hampshire Medical Society Council, which adversely affects the membership of a physician in the Society for reasons based on the competence or professional conduct of the physician, which conduct affects or could affect adversely the health or welfare of a patient or patients will be reported by the Society to the Board of Medicine. Loss or suspension of a member's license to practice medicine in the State of New Hampshire may result in loss or suspension of membership in the Society.

Each member in attendance at any scientific meeting of the Society shall enter his/her name on the registration book, indicating the component society of which he/she is a member. When his/her right to membership has been verified by reference to the roster of his/her society, he/she shall receive a badge, which shall be evidence of his/her right to all the privileges of membership at the meeting. No member or delegate shall take part in any of the proceedings of such meeting until he/she has complied with the provisions of this section.

Physicians whose membership has lapsed for non-payment of dues may request reinstatement with privilege of one year amnesty for dues payment.
