For me as a family physician, my seasonal work  includes, school and sports physicals in the summer, flu shots in the fall and winter and attention to problems associated with allergy in the spring. Similarly NHMS has seasonal priorities and now is our time to be active legislatively. We don't do this often but over the past few weeks we have asked you to speak out on an issue of importance to all of us. Thank you for taking time from your busy schedules to contact your legislators asking them to support the tobacco tax increase. Your calls will make a difference as the Senate and House negotiate the final budget. (FYI: see NHMS Medicaid Expansion resolution)

Since we are still in the legislative season, we are again asking you to speak up about an issue that affects all of us and many of our patients: Medicaid expansion.  NHMS is actively supporting Medicaid expansion because it will dramatically decrease the number of uninsured thus making acute, chronic and preventive care accessible to approximately 60,000 people in New Hampshire.  The Senate Finance Committee has voted 4-2 to strike the Medicaid expansion provisions proposed by the Governor and adopted by the House.  On June 6, the full senate will vote on the budget (HB1 and HB2) and we are asking them to restore Medicaid expansion to the bills.

Please call your senator. (Find your senator) Below is a simple script you can use to get your points across.

Hi, may I please speak to / or leave a message for Senator (last name).

My name is _____, and I'm a physician and member of the New Hampshire Medical Society from (indicate your city/town). I'm calling to ask for support to restore Medicaid expansion to the state budget, so that we can accept the federal funds to extend Medicaid to more low-income New Hampshire residents.  It matters to me because as a physician:

·         I know how much better it is for my patients to get routine preventive care instead of waiting for a crisis.

·         I see working people who forego important medical care because they are uninsured.

·         Medicaid expansion would make a difference by reducing our uncompensated care costs.

I hope I can count on you to support restoring the Medicaid expansion to the state budget.  Thank you for your time and consideration of this important public health issue.  I really appreciate it!

This simple message is vitally important for senators to hear; especially from a physician. I recognize you are busy, but this legislative season will soon come to an end and a call today may make a difference in the lives of thousands of our patients.
