How would you describe physician leadership? Is it a set of personal attributes that make someone a leader? Is it a position with a job description? Is it someone who makes a difference for an organization? There are many different aspects of physician leadership to consider.

At my hospital and at other hospitals around the state, there have been physician leadership training programs. Many physicians in leadership positions have obtained additional formal education in leadership and business. Based on one's definition of leadership, the amount of additional education is highly variable. We are fortunate to have the Geisel School of Medicine and UNH in our state that offer an abundance of training programs. However, as I started in positions of leadership, I was unable to find something that was not a fellowship, MBA or MHA. I just needed some additional tools and mentoring. I found the Hanley Physician Executive Leadership Institute in Portland Maine. I was able to attend their Advanced program and bring the Foundational program to my hospital, where 16 physicians learned new tools in areas of finance, inter- and intra-personal skills, team building, and communication. I enjoyed the camaraderie of the cohort of physician leaders in the programs.

When I started this year as President, a goal was to try to develop a network of physician leaders. As our EVP, Jim Potter was listening to members last year during his tour of the hospital medical staff meetings, it became clear that physicians in New Hampshire wanted to develop leadership skills to be able to work with administrators. Thus, we applied for a grant with the Physicians Foundation and we will be embarking on designing the New Hampshire Physician Leadership Program this summer.

I am very excited about the possibilities for this program. If you have suggestions for curriculum, would like to participate or would like to discuss it further, please contact Jim Potter at james.potter@nhms.org.  Thank you.
