Possible Contamination of Liquid Docusate

The NH DHHS issued a health alert on July 13, regarding possible contamination of liquid docusate.

CDC is investigating a multi-state outbreak of infections caused by Burkholderia cepacia complex (also known as "B. cepacia complex"), possibly linked to liquid docusate use. New Hampshire Division of Public Health Services (DPHS) is investigating a possible case in NH.

NH Division of Public Health Services (NH DPHS) recommends that healthcare providers and laboratories:

  • Not use liquid docusate product in any patient until further guidance.
  • Remain alert for infections caused by B. cepacia complex occurring among non-cystic fibrosis (CF) patients and inform infection prevention staff immediately when these infections are identified.

If you identify an infection with B. cepacia complex among non-CF patients, please report to DPHS at 603-271-4496 (after hours 1-800-852-3345, x5300), and save the isolate and all docusate products used in the facility.
