Seasonal Influenza A(H3N2) Activity and Antiviral Treatment

On December 28, 2017, NH DHHS issued a health alert regarding seasonal influenza A(H3N2) activity and antiviral treatment.

  • Influenza activity in New Hampshire and nationally has increased in recent weeks with influenza A(H3N2) viruses predominating so far this season. Prior influenza seasons, in which A(H3N2) virus predominated, have been associated with more hospitalizations and deaths. Review the attached CDC HAN-00409 issued 12/27/2017 which includes important information about the 2017-18 Influenza Season.
  • Antiviral therapy with neuraminidase inhibitors is recommended for individuals with confirmed or suspected influenza infection that is severe, progressive, results in hospitalization, or occurs in individuals who are at higher risk of complications. Treatment should not be delayed while awaiting test results.
  • Review the NH DHHS Health Alert on Influenza issued 9/28/2017 for additional recommendations regarding influenza immunization, testing, and treatment.
