Syphilis Outbreak in NH

On June 22, 2017, NH DHHS issued a health alert regarding a syphyilis outbreak in New Hampshire.  NH DPHS Health Alert

Key Points and Recommendations:

  • 42 cases of infectious syphilis were identified in New Hampshire from January through May of 2017. Over the last five years on average only 20 cases were reported during this same time frame.

The NH Division of Public Health Services is collecting key practice and capacity data from all licensed physicians in the state.  The survey is designed to collect general information regarding your current provider status and the locations at which you routinely practice medicine.  Only physicians due to renew their NH medical license in 2017 will have access to the survey.

Mosquito-borne Disease in NH 2017

On June 16, 2017, NH DHHS issued a health alert regarding mosquito-borne disease in NH for the current year. NH DPHS Health Alert

Key Points and Recommendations:

  1. Be vigilant during the summer months to consider mosquito-borne diseases, including West Nile Virus (WNV) and Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE), among patients with compatible clinical features.
  2. Remind patients to avoid mosquito bites by use of insect repellents and wearing protective clothing, and environmental reduction of mosquito populations.

Potential for Falsely Low Venous Blood Lead Test Results from Magellan LeadCare Analyzers

On June 2, 2017, the NH DHHS issued a health alert regarding falsely low venous blood lead test results from Magellan LeadCare® Analyzers. 

Key Points and Recommendations:

  • Providers should review the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) HAN (page 3 of the full health alert) about the potential for falsely low blood lead test results when Magellan Diagnostics’ LeadCare® analyzers are used to test venous blood samples (obtained by direct vein puncture).

Emerging Tickborne Diseases in NH

On June 1, 2017, the NH DHHS issued a health alert regarding emerging tickborne diseases in NH.NH DPHS Health Alert

Key Points and Recommendations:

  • Blacklegged ticks transmit four different infections in NH: Lyme, Anaplasma, Babesia, and Powassan. They may transmit other emerging infections.
  • NH has one of the highest rates of Lyme disease in the nation, and 50-60% of blacklegged ticks sampled in NH have been found to be infected with Borrelia burgdorferi, the bacterium that causes Lyme disease.
