What are your thoughts on artificial intelligence (AI) expansion into prescription renewals?

Posted By: Cathy Stratton

Artificial intelligence is becoming an increasingly common part of healthcare. In some states, patients can now renew certain prescriptions without seeing a physician. Instead, they interact with an online platform that begins with a message such as: "Hi, I'm [Company's] AI doctor. I can help you with your refill today."

These developments raise important questions. Several states are pursuing legal action against companies that use AI in this way, arguing that the technology may be engaging in the unlicensed practice of medicine. At the same time, proponents point to AI's potential to improve efficiency, expand access, and reduce administrative burdens.

As AI becomes more integrated into healthcare, what role should it play in clinical care? Where should the line be drawn between technology that supports physicians and technology that replaces clinical judgment? What safeguards are necessary to protect patients while allowing innovation to advance?

We anticipate that legislation addressing the use of AI in healthcare will be introduced in the upcoming legislative session. Before developing advocacy positions, the New Hampshire Medical Society would like to hear directly from physicians.

We invite you to share your perspective on questions such as:

  • What clinical tasks, if any, are appropriate for AI to perform independently?
  • Should AI be permitted to prescribe or renew medications without physician involvement? If so, under what circumstances?
  • What level of clinician oversight should be required?
  • What transparency should patients receive when AI is involved in their care?
  • What regulatory or ethical guardrails are essential to ensure patient safety, quality of care, accountability, and privacy?

Where do you see AI creating the greatest opportunities—and the greatest risks—for patients and physicians? Your feedback will help inform the Medical Society's policy discussions and advocacy as we engage lawmakers on this rapidly evolving issue.
